The Land Between
Slow Reading Scriptures for the Week of September 19.
This week of readings focuses on three Kings who threatened Israel’s future.
Monday: King Sihon Numbers 21:21-30
Do you think the Israelites were fearful? Why or why not?
Why was the king against Israel?
Tuesday: King Og Numbers 21:31-35
Do you think the Israelites were fearful? Why or why not?
Why was the king against Israel?
Wednesday: Balaam’s Donkey Numbers 22
A strange story!
Why does God use a donkey?
Has God used different ways in your life to communicate?
Thursday: Balaam’s oracles Numbers 23 & 24
Choose one oracle.
Why was Balak so opposed to God?
Do you know someone who has ‘hardness of heart’?
Friday: Priorities Review
Look back on your readings.
Which king offered the biggest threat?
Which king do you think you would have been worried about the most?
Saturday: Personal Threats James 1:2&3, 1 Corinthians 10:13
What can be a benefit of a trial or threat?
What guidance does James offer?
Does the Corinthian verse give you confidence? Why or why not?
Approach.
(This can take anywhere from a few minutes to ½ hour)
1. Take time to ask God to bless your reading.
2. Slowly read the daily passage in a readable and accurate version (i.e. NIV, NASB, NLT, KJB). Each reading is deliberately brief in order to allow time to be still while considering the text.
3. After reading, take a moment to consider the passage. Meditate on the world of Jesus, specific words, the listeners, context and/or the overall theme.
4. Pray regarding what the passage brings to mind.
5. Think about the text throughout the day. Perhaps a word or a simple phrase or maybe the theme can be drawn to mind. In other words, be open to what God is telling you to believe or do.
Notes.
• Following this time with the word, you may want to move into your usual prayer time.
• You may want to write down your thoughts.
• This approach is not meant to replace the study of scripture or the longer readings of the Bible.
• The memory verse provides you with a text that deals with the week's theme.
• Our web site also provides these scriptures, along with questions for thought and consideration.
